Annually each April, in Sydney.

WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE
The ASTRA Awards celebrate talent and achievements across the Australian subscription television industry and aim to develop these talents amongst the industry’s up-and-coming stars. The awards are spread over six categories including Programming, Talent, Production, Marketing, Promotions and Publicity, and Hall of Fame.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ATTEND
In 2005, 800 industry guests, celebrities and well-known Australian actors walked the red carpet for the ASTRA Awards, including presenter Mike Hammond (Fox 8), celebrity chef Bill Granger, Nell Schofield, Penne Dennison, Yumi Stynes, Senator Coonan, Nick Greiner, James Valentine, Brendan Cowell and Claudia Karvan.

WHO ORGANISES IT
Working for the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association, TP Events organises a versatile team of professionals to bring the awards to life. Event Director Danny Yezerski, Assistant Event Director Brigid Paton and Production Designer Robert Dein developed the look for the broadcast room and after party, in conjunction with Lighting Designer Francesco Calvi and Production Manager Dan Fahey. Donna Lloyd was responsible for guest management, seating, ticketing and RSVPs, while Rosie Thompson-Jones managed a VIP Cocktail Party at a nearby nightclub.

For three days prior to the event, OB Group technicians prepared the site for broadcast, under the direction of Colin Rothenberg. The seven-camera shoot required the expertise of TV Director Martin Coombes, while Floor Manager Kyle Crossling ensured the transition between the 20+ presenters and award recipients was seamless. Thanks to the experience and broadcast savvy of the team, the event ran without a hitch. The awards were taped for delayed broadcast on FOXTEL.
Screen graphics and nominee packages were created and produced by Tiara Lowndes from Omelette.

SUCCESS
The 2005 ASTRA Awards enjoyed industry kudos and rave reviews from attendees, establishing the event as a “must-do” for the subscription media industry.

CHALLENGES
Our major challenge for the ASTRAs was to build upon the high profile TP was able to raise at the 2004 awards.

SPECIAL TOUCHES
Food and beverages were a highlight at the sit-down affair. Guests munched on gourmet tapas platters including blue eye cod and roast quail prepared to perfection by Belinda Franks Catering. The Cat Empire entertained guests at the award ceremony.

During the after party, sweets were served in the form of an amazing dessert bar. Guest could grab a handful of marshmallows, freckles, sherbet sticks, Chupa Chups, liquorice, Jelly Belly beans and gummies as well as piping hot banana soufflés and dark chocolate pudding, jostling for attention amongst white, dark and praline chocolate truffles, candied orange polenta cakes, classic iced petit four and raspberry and coconut pots.

The Bamboo Bar served cocktails on the deck, as guests soaked up a view across the water to the FOXTEL Wharf; a nice touch, considering its ties to the subscription television industry.
